In the second set of the day – the 14th overall – for the capped all-rounders, Shardul Thakur was the first name, but he unfortunately went unsold. However, Gujarat Titans made a smart move by getting Washington Sundar for ₹3.2 crore. Sam Curran found his way back to Chennai Super Kings for ₹2.4 crore as Punjab Kings chose not to bid higher for their former star.
Day 2 of the IPL 2025 mega auction began with a surprising moment as former Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad player Kane Williamson went unsold. Meanwhile, Faf du Plessis, who was released by RCB, is now headed to the Delhi Capitals. Three Indian batsmen – Ajinkya Rahane, Mayank Agarwal, and Prithvi Shaw – also faced disappointment, as they found no takers.
Day 1 of the IPL mega auction may have already influenced captaincy decisions for the 2025 season. KL Rahul joined Delhi Capitals for INR 14 crore, and last year's Delhi captain, Rishabh Pant, was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for a record INR 27 crore. Punjab Kings spent INR 26.75 crore on Shreyas Iyer, who captained Kolkata Knight Riders to a title last season. KKR themselves paid INR 23.75 crore for Venkatesh Iyer, making him an obvious captaincy candidate.
The first day of the IPL 2025 auction was historic, with franchises securing their core teams for the upcoming season through some blockbuster deals and strategic moves. Shreyas Iyer set a record as the most expensive player sold in the IPL auction, only for Rishabh Pant to break it minutes later by being sold to Lucknow Super Giants for INR 27 crore. This day in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was filled with high stakes and intense competition.
Punjab Kings emerged as the highest spenders, investing 88 crores to rebuild their team under Ricky Ponting's guidance. Shreyas Iyer was the headline acquisition, likely to become the new captain, but significant amounts were also spent on bringing back Arshdeep Singh and acquiring Yuzvendra Chahal. Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis were other major additions to the franchise.
Delhi Capitals made significant progress in forming their new lineup, now led by KL Rahul for 14 crores. Harry Brook and Jake Fraser-McGurk returned to the team, while the addition of world-class seamer Mitchell Starc strengthened their bowling attack. Delhi will now focus on adding depth and strong backup options on day two.
Lucknow Super Giants built a formidable batting core without overspending. Rishabh Pant was their biggest purchase, with Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and David Miller rounding out a powerful lineup centered around Nicholas Pooran. The return of Avesh Khan was a smart move, but they will look to strengthen their bowling on the second day.
RCB fans were initially frustrated with their slow auction start, but the arrival of international talents like Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone, and Josh Hazlewood, along with domestic acquisitions Jitesh Sharma and Rasikh Salam Dar, put them in a strong position for the upcoming season. However, there is still work to be done for the Bangalore team.
Gujarat Titans built an impressive pace attack, securing Kagiso Rabada, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj. They also managed to acquire a key player in Jos Buttler, partnering him with young Indian opener Shubman Gill. The pieces seem to be falling into place for GT.
KKR faced the challenge of replacing their championship-winning captain but opted to invest heavily in Venkatesh Iyer for 23.75 crores, the most surprising purchase price on day one. They retained Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who might step into the top order, and added Anrich Nortje to replace Mitchell Starc while keeping Vaibhav Arora. The question remains if they can repeat their success.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, already well-prepared before the auction, added experienced Indian internationals Ishan Kishan and Mohammed Shami, along with Rahul Chahar and Harshal Patel, to strengthen their squad. With a strong foundation, SRH fans have reasons to be optimistic about achieving heights similar to their impressive 2024 season.
Chennai Super Kings made astute purchases, securing Khaleel Ahmed at 4.80 crores and retaining Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. However, the highlight of their auction was the return of Ravichandran Ashwin, who is set to weave his magic at the Chepauk once again.
Rajasthan Royals focused on enhancing their bowling, with the batting lineup already solid. Their primary acquisition was Jofra Archer, although his fitness remains a concern. They also added Sri Lankan spinners Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga but will seek more star power in bowling on day two.
Mumbai Indians were the least active on day one, avoiding marquee buys early on but later securing Trent Boult to bolster their powerplay bowling, alongside welcoming back Naman Dhir. The key question for Mumbai will be how they utilize their remaining funds on the second day.
